Origins
The 7th Special Combat Operation Unit “Defiance” was born not from doctrine, but from friction. Formed out of Brigadier Yuri Lowenthal’s backbone, the concept that would become the 7th SCOU came from a combination of loyalty, selflessness and endless perseverance against the foes of Super Earth. First ever conceived by Yuri during his time as a Captain within the Helldiver Corps, he would come to a simple philosophy that has lived on within the unit as its motto. This simple motto; “Equipment is cheap. Experienced Helldivers are irreplaceable.”
As a highly skilled officer and a Helldiver in his early career, Lowenthal had become dissuaded by the standard Helldiver combat doctrine during the Battle of Malevelon Creek, in which he and his squad were often separated from their Super Destroyer and other SEAF elements. Though for many squads this would mean certain death, Lowenthal and his team managed to make the most of the separation by prioritizing self sufficiency, forgoing the typical extraction methods and making their own systems of survival to keep the fight going. By the time Lowenthal had extracted for the first time from Malevelon after several weeks, he had garnered such an intrinsic understanding of both Automaton forces and his own independent combat methods that he would immediately plunge himself back into the fires of Malevelon to apply the theory into practice once more, this time with refreshed equipment and greater support from the fleets above.
Malevelon Creek would serve as the ultimate crucible for this new form of Helldiver warfare to be taken from mere ideas and forge it into a reliable practice. The constant need for adaptation and survival, the ceaseless communication blackouts between teams and ships, the impenetrable Automaton defenses. This combination of factors created a friction so potent that only few would survive the challenge. Yuri was one of these few and from his survival came a new form of combat.
After the Malevelon Creek was firmly liberated and secured, the then Captain Yuri Lowenthal would approach Super Earth High Command with the idea to build a new unit within the Helldiver Corps. Presenting them with countless reports of his squad’s exploits and the outlines of his newly formed combat doctrine, Yuri emphasized the need for not an experiment, but an entirely different approach to the Helldivers operations. This doctrine emphasised rapid, covert insertion and extractions against fortified enemy infrastructure points to sabotage or steal vital information, with operations being far more prolonged compared to average mission sequences and being conducted much deeper beyond typical Helldiver operational envelopes.
These weren’t mere commando or special operations, but deep strikes intended to push beyond the limits Super Earth had placed upon the Helldivers.
Such missions would be conducted with hand selected, highly disciplined Helldivers with extensive experience in battle. Scrutinous planning would be done ahead of time, though these operators would not rely on planning alone to get the job done, with their training emphasizing adaptation above all else.
Most importantly, Yuri’s time on Malevelon and the way he had approached enemy fortifications there had landed him great creditability, showcasing this doctrine could work, requiring only the know-how ahead of time.
There was much debate between Yuri and High Command over the application of such doctrine and to what scale, in addition to who would oversee such a unit, but eventually a decision was reached. High Command would approve of Yuri’s formation of this specialized unit. Its only condition was who was permitted within, as at the time, only a handful of Helldivers could live up to such expectation. But with enough time and training, the unit could surely grow into a sizable and practical force that placed results above spectacle.
Formalized in late 2184, the 7th Special Combat Operation Unit would be consolidated within the Helldiver Corps, with the now recently promoted Brigadier Yuri Lowenthal at its helm given his operational experience and priceless knowledge. From then on, the 7th SCOU swiftly began conducting themselves according to this new combat philosophy.
Wasting no time upon their formation, Yuri saw himself and the handful of Helldivers who he held in high regard under his command to take the fight to the foes of Managed Democracy as quickly as they could. Operations would begin the moment the Ministry of Intelligence was able to relay targets of interest to them, and for the first time, Yuri was overseeing all aspects of every mission placed under his care. Like a fine scalpel, the 7th SCOU would aim deep and cut hard into enemy positions that were otherwise deemed “impossible” by even the bravest of Helldivers.
Although they began small, they have made great strides as a highly manageable unit. As far back as Malevelon their exploits have been felt. Though their members vary in history and skillsets, they are each all uniquely equipped for the specific tasks that are required of the 7th.
At present, the 7th SCOU has seen considerable growth in both its members and operational trust. Though Yuri’s history regarding the Ministries greater political exploits remains a great point of contention, operationally the 7th is regarded as one of the most reliable units within the Helldivers.
"Defiance"
The exact origin of their nickname, “Defiance”, has not been identified as no member of its command structure or High Command has admitted to signing off on such. However, it is believed it was originally coined by either younger members of the unit or petty officers within SEAF, as when they heard high ranking officers complain about the unit’s operations they’d often regard them as “defiant”, thus the name stuck amongst the rumors told between those lesser officers and soldiers.
Regardless, the name has since become an official staple of the 7th, as they both defy the standard Helldiver doctrine and the enemies of Managed Democracy at every corner of the Galactic War.
I will stand among the first and last line of defense. I will always remain steadfast and vigilant against the threat of the unknown. I will have confidence to face the threats head on and protect humanity's way of life in the face of total annihilation. No matter the costs.
Vigilo Confido.
— Official motto of the 7th Special Combat Operations Unit "Defiance".
