The first lesson taught in every academy of Super Earth is obedience to protocol. It is, in the overwhelming majority of engagements, sound instruction. Protocol is nothing more than the distilled memory of a thousand prior victories, and the officer who discards it lightly will, as often as not, author his own defeat. Yet there exists a rarer and far more dangerous category of enemy, one who has read the same manuals, memorized the same doctrines, and learned to anticipate the precise responses those doctrines demand. Against such a foe, obedience becomes a liability. The commander who cannot recognize the moment to depart from his training will lead his fleet, in perfect order and flawless discipline, directly into the trap prepared for it.
The naval engagement above Cyberstan was precisely such a moment.
At 7:12 hours the faster than light corridor from Merga IV to Cyberstan was opened, and the largest invasion fleet in the history of mankind was unleashed upon the defenders of the Cyborg homeworld. What awaited us on the far side of that corridor was not the disorganized garrison our intelligence had implied. The Cyborg fleet had positioned itself with deliberate care at the exact point of egress which was precisely the one coordinate through which every one of our vessels was compelled to arrive.
The formation they had chosen was old. It is called the shield wall, and its logic has not changed since it was first drawn in the harbors of feudal Japan: present an unbroken front to a superior force, absorb its momentum, and let the attacker exhaust himself against a line he cannot flank. Our manuals treat this formation as a solved problem. Doctrine calls for the attacker to concentrate his firepower, form a spear, and drive a single breakout through the center. It is a clean answer, and it has worked a hundred times.
The Cyborgs were counting on it.
This is the detail an inexperienced officer overlooks, and it is the one that decided the battle before a single shot was fired. The Cyborgs were once ours. They were built from our doctrine, trained in our academies, and shaped by our discipline before they turned against Super Earth. They did not merely know the shield wall, they knew our answer to the shield wall, because it had once been their answer as well. To such an enemy, the correct textbook maneuver is not a threat. It is a prediction. And a predicted enemy is a defeated one.
Fortunately, the fleet was in the hands of officers who understood this. Command fell to General Brasch himself, with Admiral Pincer at his side, and I was granted the honor of leading a contingent on the left flank.
As the engagement opened, Brasch did not form the spear. He gave the order for the fleet to widen in order to break the enemy line not at one point but at two, set upon a single axis and struck in the same instant. The purpose of this maneuver is frequently misread as a simple show of force. It is not. A double breach along a common line does two things a single spear cannot: it divides the enemy's attention across two crises he cannot prioritize, and it seeds our own vessels into the gaps from which a later reformation can be launched. We were not trying to punch through the wall. We were positioning ourselves inside it.
The Cyborgs responded as any competent fleet would. As we opened the two breaches, they surged forward, seeking to pin our vessels against their own advance before we could exploit the openings. Here the principle is elementary and absolute: when an enemy closes to fix you in place, you must answer with volume of fire, not maneuver, or you will be caught mid-motion and destroyed. Our line answered with a full salvo from the concussion missile launchers, saturating the enemy shields and blunting the first wave of their counter-thrust.
It was in the cover of that salvo that the first fighter squadrons launched and it was there that the battle truly turned. Their orders were narrow and deliberate: they were not sent to trade blows across the whole of the enemy fleet, but to disable the shields and short range drives of the Cyborg capital ships and destroyers alone. A capital ship stripped of its drives is no longer a warship. It is a fixed emplacement, unable to reposition, unable to lend its guns to a shifting line. By spending our fighters and our heaviest weapons on the few vessels that dictated the movement of the many, we did not merely damage the enemy fleet. We froze it.
With the enemy's capacity for maneuver crippled, Brasch gave the order to reform and the reformation he chose was audacious to the edge of recklessness. He resolved to encircle the encirclement. To wrap our own line around the outside of theirs.
I will not pretend this was a safe decision. It was not. To encircle a fleet already arrayed to encircle you, your own line must be drawn perilously thin, and the loss of even one or two battle cruisers at the wrong point can shatter the entire ring. But the reward for a ring that holds is total: the enemy is severed from his own reserves and reduced to a collection of isolated pockets, to be dismantled one at a time. My own unit was dispatched to the outer arc, tasked with destroying the frigates and cruisers that might otherwise have slipped through and threatened our capital ships and landing vessels. The remainder of the fleet closed to broadside range, and the two forces began to wind into opposing circles — ours around theirs.
It was at this point that the enemy revealed the sharpness of their own command. Rather than commit their flagship to a battle they could feel slipping, the Cyborg command withdrew it, taking with them a detachment of battleships and two carriers.
This is what I would call, to any officer studying this record, the gambit. The enemy has split his force, and you are offered a choice. You may pursue the flagship, the king, the seat of command, the decapitating stroke or you may turn upon the main body he has left behind, heavy with valuable ships, the queen. The instinct of the ambitious officer is to hunt the king. It is almost always the wrong instinct. The flagship, in flight, threatens no one. The main body, still intact, threatened our super destroyers and our landing ships which are the very vessels upon which the entire invasion depended. We took the queen. The king was permitted to run, because a king in flight is a king who has already surrendered the field.
The remaining Cyborg force did not break easily. Drawing into an arrow line to force a breakout, and shedding their own disabled battleships and carriers to do it, they managed to take three of our cruisers and one battleship in order to break the ring, a toll paid almost entirely by their fighters, who pounded our shields and kept our own squadrons pinned away from their primary targets. Denied a clean escape, they withdrew at last into an omega formation: a posture that holds a position against encirclement, but only by trading away nearly all offensive capability. It is the shape a fleet takes when it has stopped trying to take the offensive but instead priorities its own survival and the defense of their position.
That was the moment the naval battle was decided, though it was far from the moment it ended. With the enemy fleet fixed in a defensive crouch, the first landing sites opened to us, and deployment began. From that point onward the Cyborgs held their defensive posture for the remainder of the engagement, and the contest above Cyberstan ceased to be a fleet action at all. It became a duel between our warships and the orbital cannons rising from the planet's surface and that duel would be settled not in the void, but on the ground.
Let me be exact in my assessment for flattery teaches nothing. The Cyborg tactics were intelligent and, in their opening, genuinely excellent. Their choice of anchor point alone deserves study: the standard Automaton fleet takes a defensive station directly above its world, ceding the FTL egress entirely. The Cyborgs did the opposite. They met us at the doorway, and had they encircled us there as they intended, no amount of our superior tonnage would have saved the fleet from being dismantled at the point of arrival. It was a plan that should have worked.
It failed for a single reason. It was a plan built to defeat our doctrine and it met commanders who declined to follow it. General Brasch and Admiral Pincer read the trap for what it was, and answered an unpredicted maneuver with an even less anticipated one. The result was not merely a victory but the ideal opening to the invasion: the Cyborgs, having committed to holding the void, were now forced to divide their attention between a naval front and a ground front simultaneously, and every hour they spent so divided was an hour our High Command spent planning the campaign to come.
This is the lesson I would have every young officer carry from Cyberstan into their own command.
There is a brilliance available to you that has nothing to do with the number of your guns or the strength of your line. It is the brilliance of anticipation, of seeing through your enemy's tactics to the reasoning beneath them, and then subverting the very expectations he has built his plan upon. It is at battles such as this that new doctrine is written and it is in such moments that any unknown officer may make a name that outlives the war. I myself had that honor during the later stages of the battle.
But the deepest lesson is older than any of us, and I will leave you with it plainly. Know yourself, and know your enemy. Do this without fail, and you need not fear the outcome of a hundred battles for you will already have won them.
